  • 1. The rabid frothing from the mouth and nostrils, finger nails morphing into claws; fire Mack Brown group need to hurry to the nearest psyche ward for emergency treatment. Their loud, rancorous wailings and vituperations have made this board intolerable and bother line unpleasant a place to visit and share thoughts about ‘horn football.
    2. Sorry about the recruiting situation. I think attempts to put a good spin on it are childish. Everyone knows what fail is. Losing 5 prior commits, well 4 if you exclude RSJ—‘cause we did stop trying to get him—is a fail irrespective of how one looks at it. I am not sure I have ever read of a school having that many kids change their minds about going there other than a Coaching change situation. So Coach, it is a fail and please find a way to say so so we know you have a firm grasp of things. Up cannot be down and down cannot be up in the real world. When you don't sign a DL and RB it is interesting but when you had them and they choose to spurn you at the altar--well...that's not good.
    3. Question is what can be done about it. Nothing until play begins in the fall. 2013 is a test of the program season. It is a win big at all costs season.
    4. DC cannot have a single day or night of rest this offseason because the bad taste—actually RANCID is much more appropriate --collapse and very bad play of the defense last year has to be erased. I could not watch after a point last year. At Texas, defense has always been the calling card. What was tendered as a excuse for defense last year was SAD.
    5. It was not the players either. How many schools filled in a bunch of frosh into starting slots last year and won big? Hey OSU Coach took a team that could not win and went undefeated.
    6. Glad to see Coach Saban quiet down all the rabid idiots that have been lying about how he does it. Hint: He knows how. That’s how he does it.
    7. Like most people I was wrong about the ability of the DC to field a good defense. I was seduced by the defense’s play in the Cal game. I am now very skeptical even after a good 2nd half in the OSU game. Can the DC really coach defense? Does he have the know how to use what he has to still field a respectable D? It was said of the Bear that he could use yours to beat his. That is what knowing how to do it means. Does the DC know how to do it? There is no substitute for that in any profession.
    8. Let’s quit giving cover to any Coach as well. I expected better from the OL and it failed to produce when it counted. If we get one yard we beat WVU. We couldn’t get one yard at the goal against KU. It is perplexing that we have not developed an option other than what we are playing in the middle of that line, which happens to be the point. I can’t help but remember the state of Georgia’s Oline under this Coach when they made their change. Gives me pause.
    9. The S & C needs to be accountable as well. Our Oline was weak last year. WEAK. So was the Dline. As in getting pushed around most of the year—scheme notwithstanding.
    10. Can Coach Brown right the ship? Everyone’s guess is as good as the next person’s. One thing for sure, a little reinventing is in order; fielding a physically outstanding group is in order; playing only the best players is in order; having a no excuses philosophy is in order; removing the cuddling hand is in order; doing it with a little Sabanism is in order.

  • Your point about S&C is spot on. Diaz, Bo, and Searls are taking heat, and deservedly so, but how much of their failure is a reault of both lines being extremely weak at the point of attack. We have gone backwards since Wylie's arrival and only those blinded by their fatdog hatred don't see that.

  • Thanks for putting your thoughts down.

Some initial thoughts without debating or agreeing with everything.

    1. There is definitely something the Horns can do prior to the start of the 2013 season. They need to get on the right kids and, if they aren't going to get their commitments, they need to make them prolong their decision, to say to at least give them a chance after the season starts.

    2. Nick Saban has an interesting way of recruiting. His spring and junior scholarship offers are interesting. The offers, I am told, only become valid if the player comes to one of his camps that summer and only then will he take the commitment. Then, and only if the player performs well enough, does he truly push for the commitment.

So basically it's an offer contingent upon performing well, which isn't really an offer.

There are some exceptions to that rule, but that's how he carpet bombs offers and doesn't get called under the carpet for it.

Not true. Our line is weaker than they need to be but I don't think that's on S&C. The truth is, many of them weren't destined to be road-grading animals no matter what program they went to.

  • Strength coaches can only do so much. I haven't noticed any difference in our play in the last two years. We don't play any stronger or tougher.

  • Great post, but disagree with 9. Those kids are in shape and don't suck oxygen in the fourth quarter. Getting pushed around (sometimes imo, not all the time) on the O line has a number of fingerprints from past bad decisions from the staff. The D line isn't pushed back, they're being easily nudged sideways due to poor scheme. Wylie can build mean ass mofos on the line if given the right bodies. Last years D line group and this years O line group does that - we'll see Bennie's benefit a little more this year, much more the next.

    Interesting.

In point one, you say we Mack detractors are looney.

You then follow up with nine reasons Mack and the coaching staff have failed epically.

    Shouldn't you consider rethinking #1 (or #s 2-10) ?

Edit: Sorry for the repeat Simkin - I didn't read the whole thread.
