A look at all the high character kids transferring to Baylor

  • COACH CUTLIP said...

Texas doesn't recruit kids with problems unlike Collins and Joseph? I'm sure if these kids get into trouble at Baylor theyll be gone too.

What issues did they have? Any proof?

These dipshits Briles welcomes have criminal records easy to look up. And did enough to get kicked out of school. Which means there are 2 or 3 other offenses the kids had that didn't get reported.

Mack never takes kids with records. Otherwise Derry and Bobino wouldn't be playing LB from 2006 to 2007, Duncan and Collins would be.

I challenge you to find one player Mack has taken in his 13 years at Texas with a criminal issue that is supported by a valid news article or public record. Art Briles, whose Stephenville outfit passed out more steroids tha Nebraska did in '94, has taken multiple kids in the last 12 months with demonstrable criminal records

Question wasn't directed at me but I am almost positive Collins had a record and his HS coach didn't tell the Texas coaches. In fact I believe he was arrested in August before reporting to campus.............correct me if I am wrong.

  • Again, any evidence of Mack courting players with any kind of legal issues, or especially the kind that will get you kicked off another team?

Yes I answered it before................Collins (correct me if I am wrong) had a record before he entered UT...............does he do it on a regular basis........No! But Mack's record for off the field issues is not very good overall. There is a reason he created a new position on his staff for Rucker.

Robert Joseph was arrested 2x during his senior year in HS.

  • did you even bother to read the article you just linked? Let me copy and paste an excerpt for you.

A source close to the University of Texas football program said coaches who signed Joseph in February 2006 were shocked to find out this summer that the Titans' all-state safety had a police record.

Add key Memorial coaches to the list of those recently stunned to learn Joseph was on probation in Jefferson County for misdemeanor charges of marijuana possession and evading arrest.

The Longhorn coaches reportedly found out in June, when Joseph was arrested in Austin on two misdemeanor counts of auto burglary. Learning of the Jefferson County charges led Coach Mack Brown to permanently kick Joseph out of the Longhorn program.

Cliffnotes: The Texas coaches and Joseph's high school coaches didn't even know.

  • Again, please post an article or publIc record issued before Texas accepted an athlete evidencing criminal activity. The best you have is an article from a few years ago that was written a couple years after we took on Joseph stating we didn't know about Joseph's past? And then Joseph was kicked out. Nice work there.

Briles has now taking a few in the last 2 months that have a record that would make John Gotti blush.

    Randy Watson

  • Do you think its worse to be a negligent recruiter or a recruiter who is willing to look the other way. Because Texas was one or the other and neither was good.

What do you expect them to say after their player was involved in as much trouble as Joseph was. That they knowingly brought a thug onto campus? Mack always touts that they talk to everybody when they recruit a kid. How did they miss it? Or did they?

Would you like me to find an article by CNN or the NY times regarding a regional recruit in SE TX? If that's what you would like you win. Can't do it.

I'm not making this a Baylor vs Texas thing. I'm just saying everyone takes chances on talent . Even Mack. And another thing, when a kid screws up bad enough you're supposed to kick him off the team. You don't get credit for it..

I'm not sure you know who John Gotti is?

  • When a kid screws up the 3-5 times it takes to get punted, Briles doesn't give a damn and has his arms wide open.

  • Its all about winning games. Briles is taking kids who can help him win just like every other coach in America. What if they go thru their career at Baylor and dont have any problems? Still a bad take? Im not sure about other incidents involving football players at BU, but i know he kicked Josh Gordon off the team last year for issues involving drugs so lets not act like hes Barry Switzer.

Let's not change history here. He didn't kick Gordon off the team. He was suspended indefinitely early in fall camp. Rather than wait out the suspension, Gordon transferred voluntarily. Briles did kick off Willie Jefferson for the same offense, though, but he wasn't a big contributor.

Ok. Wasnt sure about the details.

You know in all honesty I'm not worried. It's mainly because I don't think about that stuff. Now that being said I wouldn't want these guys to assault women or rob people at gun point or any other of a litany of things. I just want to sit down on the weekend and watch Baylor or Texas win football games. For my own selfish reasons that what I care about. And if these kids can do that I'm fine with it.

I'm not sure what kind of kids these are. Good, bad or other. I will say that I don't think Briles is a win at all cost kinda guy. But I know just as much about a coach at a school as most fans. Although I have met Briles a few times and he comes off as a likable guy. I have no idea what goes on behind the curtain.

My other thought is that I don't think its a bad thing that these kids are getting a fresh start somewhere new. I know I made plenty of mistakes in college and definitely learned the hard way from them but I also was given an opportunity to get my life on track. Would you like every person who comes into your program to be a hybrid of Colt McCoy and RG3, absolutely but that's rarely the case.

Now I dont know these kids from Adam. But in Stonums case he obviously has a problem with booze like a lot of people. And imo Seastrunk obviously made a mistake with Lyles but other than that i hadn't heard he was any trouble. Dont know about any of the other guys.

Also I believe that Baylor, to compete with the big boys needs to take chances on kids. Schools like Texas don't need to.

I think there's some truth in regards to second chances. It seems like many of the "bad eggs" UT gets rid of get it straightened out elsewhere.

Hopefully Baylor can "save" some of these lost souls.

I can't think of any problem kids that got it together elsewhere after leaving UT. Marcus Davis, Ramonce, Andre Davis, Collins, Joseph, etc. I'm not asking this sarcastically, but what players are you thinking of in this respect? Dan Buckner may have a shot this year at Arizona.

I can say this because my son will be a senior next year at Baylor. The vast majority of kids at Baylor are good kids. I've met most of my sons frat brothers and other friends and they are solid kids. But when you look at the athletes (my son agrees) they are thugs for the most part. (especially the basketball players) The administration has chosen to ignore what is going on in the athletic department. 2 years ago the best basketball player broke his girlfriends jaw..........the administration gave him about 5 games suspension vs weak non-conference teams. Scott Drew and his staff made hundred's of phone calls to recruits not permitted by the NCAA yet the Baylor fans I know said well the calls would be OK in a few months and everybody does it we just got caught. They have a win at all cost mentality and its only going to get worse because they've tasted success and don't want to go back to the bad ole days. (plus they have to pay for a new stadium)

I agree 100%. My youngest daughter will be a senior at Baylor this fall. There are a lot of great kids at Baylor. However, some of the athletes are another story. Scott Drew is as slippery as they come and I don't think that Briles is far behind him.

  • I know the Baylor basketball team has been less than stellar behavior wise, but what wrong has the football team done? Briles may be taking a chance on some of these guys, but it looks like he is handling it pretty well.

  • Has Baylor completely given up on projecting Baptists values? Tcu got busted for dealing drugs. As weird as it sounds, smu is the only church affiliated school doing things right these days.

  • This might have more to do with the fact that this is a faith-based university which, within it's Christian beliefs, are significant stances on forgiveness, second chances, and helping out their fellow man.

I don't think what they're doing is out of line although it appears that the grace in question is directed specifically at good football players. Then again, maybe we hear about them only because they're in football.

I could of been talking out of my arse a bit. After guys leave there isn't much said about them. But Collins and Taylor seem to be on the cusp of an NFL chance. I thought that Andre caught on at a small school with similar stories for some. Maybe I'm wrong. I certainly didn't mean they'd set the world on fire. More so that they aren't in prison, there were some serious crimes commited by some former players.

Wish that were the case but they are doing these things because they got a taste for winning.............how many of these "character" kids would be given a second chance if they didn't run a 4.4 or were 6'10"?

So schools shouldn't take players that will help them win games?
