A look at all the high character kids transferring to Baylor

  • Lache Seastrunk - has been in the Baylor program for almost a year now. He not only allowed a leach by the name of Willie Lyles to pimp him out and make money off of him, but he likely received illegal benefits of his own as well. This probably allowed him to sleep like a baby while Lyles was allegedly doing the nasty with his mom in the next room.

Shawn Oakman - kicked off the Penn St. team by new coach Bill O'Brien for attempting to steal from a campus eatery. Before this, he was identified as a participant in a robbery at a pizza delivery man.

Mike Orakpo - was one of four CSU football players involved in the beating of four freshman CSU students. These four students were minding their own business while walking home from a party when Orakpo and his thug friends yelled obscenities at them. When the students said something back, the players stopped the car, got out, and began beating one of the students head in. The other students were so afraid for the kid that they shielded his head from the beating.

Used syringes, presumably for anabolic steroids, were also found in Orakpo's room by police.

Darryl Stonum - has had three run-ins with the law in three years at Michigan, including two DUI arrests. Coach Hoke suspended him for the entire 2011 season before dismissing him from the team.

If you add these to the BU basketball players it really is becoming a school where any player (no matter the circumstances) is allowed to play.

As a Baylor fan, aren't you concerned about some of these kids that Briles is opening his program to?

  • You would think any parent thinking of sending their child to that school might think twice given the thuggish types Briles and Drew are bringing onto campus.

You know in all honesty I'm not worried. It's mainly because I don't think about that stuff. Now that being said I wouldn't want these guys to assault women or rob people at gun point or any other of a litany of things. I just want to sit down on the weekend and watch Baylor or Texas win football games. For my own selfish reasons that what I care about. And if these kids can do that I'm fine with it.

I'm not sure what kind of kids these are. Good, bad or other. I will say that I don't think Briles is a win at all cost kinda guy. But I know just as much about a coach at a school as most fans. Although I have met Briles a few times and he comes off as a likable guy. I have no idea what goes on behind the curtain.

My other thought is that I don't think its a bad thing that these kids are getting a fresh start somewhere new. I know I made plenty of mistakes in college and definitely learned the hard way from them but I also was given an opportunity to get my life on track. Would you like every person who comes into your program to be a hybrid of Colt McCoy and RG3, absolutely but that's rarely the case.

Now I dont know these kids from Adam. But in Stonums case he obviously has a problem with booze like a lot of people. And imo Seastrunk obviously made a mistake with Lyles but other than that i hadn't heard he was any trouble. Dont know about any of the other guys.

Also I believe that Baylor, to compete with the big boys needs to take chances on kids. Schools like Texas don't need to.

I can say this because my son will be a senior next year at Baylor. The vast majority of kids at Baylor are good kids. I've met most of my sons frat brothers and other friends and they are solid kids. But when you look at the athletes (my son agrees) they are thugs for the most part. (especially the basketball players) The administration has chosen to ignore what is going on in the athletic department. 2 years ago the best basketball player broke his girlfriends jaw..........the administration gave him about 5 games suspension vs weak non-conference teams. Scott Drew and his staff made hundred's of phone calls to recruits not permitted by the NCAA yet the Baylor fans I know said well the calls would be OK in a few months and everybody does it we just got caught. They have a win at all cost mentality and its only going to get worse because they've tasted success and don't want to go back to the bad ole days. (plus they have to pay for a new stadium)

  • When you've sucked like BU, it makes it hard not to win at all costs.

    What a terrible program.

"taking chances" by opening your program to players that have been kicked out of other programs is pretty damn close to winning at all costs.

We are talking about the transfer of three players in one offseason who were kicked out of their respective programs. Kind of alarming, IMO.

Maybe. But as I stated before that kind of stuff doesn't bother me.

I didn't stop rooting for Texas when they recruited Brandon Collins and all his baggage. Or when Robert Joseph and Andre Jones robbed an apartment or when Sergio Kindle "fell asleep at the wheel" and took out an apartment then fled the scene. Nor when he and Lamar Houston got DUIs. Or when Kenny Vacarro beat up a kid. Did you?

    COACH CUTLIP

  • Bringing character issue players into a program is a ticking bomb. Don't know when it will happen or if any of these transfers will be involved, but it will happen.

not even close to the same thing. Texas kicked them off, rather than letting them join the football team. And with Vaccaro, I believe he threw a basketball at someone in Gregory Gym.

Coach I will say this...........you are very consistent. It doesn't make any difference if you are defending TO, Briles or Scott Drew. For me character and doing things the right way count...........

Collins, Joseph, and Jones were booted. Kindle got 3 games suspension for his DUI. Houston got 2.

Texas doesn't recruit kids with legal tousle nor do they actively court athletes kicked out of other programs for legal issues. For recruits, see Brandon Duncan and Chris Collins.

    Randy Watson

  • Brandon Collins and Joseph had issues prior to enrollment. They were allowed to join the team.

All I'm saying is everyone takes chances on character. Even Mack.

Texas doesn't recruit kids with problems unlike Collins and Joseph? I'm sure if these kids get into trouble at Baylor theyll be gone too.

Yes I have a son who will be a senior next year. He's had a great experience at BU.

...............not a better man just a different opinion. BTW I have the same issues with Mack when he signs kids with poor academics/character. IMHO he's done it too many times. We need to remember it is Coach Brown who said from day 1 he would recruit kids who with good character who graduate and win championships.

Alway enjoy the debate. And I wasn't defending Dez I was defending TO against someone saying he wasn't a great player

Was Teddy Bruschi a thug? Is Tom Brady, Peyton Manning or Eli Manning a thug? How about Colt McCoy or Vince Young or Earl Campbell? I think players who do the little things win games and championships. That requires discipline in many areas of their lives..........
