A little insight on Daje Johnson

Sorry to be dense, but what are up downs?

I believe they are a warm-up exercise (practice, pre-game) where the players hit the ground and jump back up in rapid succession.

He's had off field issues before he got to Texas.

But his play the last couple of weeks has not screamed "get me the ball more". At least not to me.

The run against Tech that he pushed outside unnecessarily is a legit issue.

At the same time, motioning him out of the backfield like Texas did and sending him deep should have resulted in a TD on Saturday. He really can be a match-up problem in the passing game.

He looks like he would be really dangerous in the screen game. Pretty hard to corral in open field, good balance and speed to take it to the house.

I wish we would have given Daje a redshirt, and given the ball to Monroe more.

Daje could have used a year to mature

I disagree. They're not the same type of player; Daje is a much more well rounded football player. He has the instincts that Monroe lacks.

It's inaccurate and kind of silly to speculate about past carries, but I don't think Monroe scores on all of Daje's scores. He is a special player. I don't think there is any way you could have redshirted him.

i have no knowledge of Daje's situation or if he's a "troubled" guy, but it seems that getting him on the field is the best way to get him to buy in to the team.

Yeah, depends on the kid but sometimes a year off without football to concentrate on and playing time to use as incentive is the worst thing for a kid.

Before the season started, Daje got into a bar fight. Before the coaches found out, Daje had a petulant attitude towards the coaches. As the coaches were brainstorming how they were going to deal with his attitude, they got the news of the bar fight. Harsin, Applewhite, and Wiley had him do some "exercises". Yes, Daje puked. Daje was then told to go see Mack in his office. Mack told him he wouldn't play in the opener. Daje was crushed and has been a model citizen ever since. His off the field stuff is old news. Lack of touches presently has been dictated mostly by other people stepping up, Daje needing a little more coaching with his vision, and the flow of the game. It isn't related to off the field stuff at this point. Ther is only one ball. Davis, Ship, Gray, Berg, Goodwin, DJ.......somebody is going to have a spell where they don't get the ball. And Malcolm B. hasn't got back I to the fold yet.

He's a kid and deserves to be allowed to grow and mature. This coaching staff seems to do a good job of this. Daje seems to have grown from missing that first game. His on the field will get better with experience.

Disciplinary exercise. You chop your feet running in place then quickly fall into pushup position and get yourself back up. Repeated done quickly while the coach blows his whistle, etc.

We called them "grass drills" in my day and we did them in a big circle at the end of practice after multiple wind sprints of 40 yards. Sucked the life out of you!

  • If its off the field or attitude related then I'm more accepting. However, the nothing about his performance screams play me is crap to me. Maybe his attitude is somewhat attributable to watching Bergeron continually trotted out there to do squat.

Give Daje or Monroe 15 carries a game and defensive coordinators have a lot more to think about. If I'm a DC I love seeing Bergeron out there.

...Past the point of puking, until there's nothing left to puke.

The five-yard loss to Tech gave Tech the ball back. Jeremy Hills would have made a first down on that play.

Johnson can absolutely be feast or famine. That doesn't scream play me more. It screams play me less.

you better have a stretcher ready if you plan to give Monroe 15 carries a game. With Monroe, it's easy to get dazzled with the bright lights, but fact of the matter is that he gets his runs because the offense has been setting up the jet sweep all day long with handoffs to other RBs. If you stick Monroe in there 15 carries a game, you'll not only get him killed, you wipe out his big play potential because the defense knows he can't run inside and you can just contain the outside to keep him bottled up.

Bergeron can be 2 yards or famine. Give me the opportunity off a home run and development of a more talented player than over that.

Little backs do fine all over the country. The he'll get killed argument is weak and unimaginative.

At a big conference/school? D'Anthony Thomas is about the only one that comes close to DJ's size and Thomas is 2 inches taller. More importantly, Thomas is also a WR. DJ can't catch, so the only role you have for him is a decoy home run hitter running out of the jet sweep and returning KOs.
