A little insight on Daje Johnson

  • I've talked to a few of my friends on the team and up-downs are know as Daje's now. The biggest reason why he doesn't get more touches during the games is because of his off the field actions. They're pushing hard to straighten out his behavior.

  • He also doesn't read the hole very well. He missed a great chance for a big play in each of the last two games because he didn't see the lane. Last week he broke outside when the middle opened up. This week he ran into a wall in the A gap when the right B gap opened up. Could have been a big play.
He has so much talent and I wish he would get more carries, but he can't miss holes by being impatient.

Do you know why he was suspended for the first game?

I've seen the same thing. Ed Cunningham kept harping on freshman RBs don't hit the hole fast enough.....BS, they often hit the hole too fast instead of showing patience and letting the blocks get set up. It's why Gray is so damn good.

  • I hope he doesn't go to Aggie parties picking fights with a backpack full of dope in the car.

  • He's had off field issues before he got to Texas.

But his play the last couple of weeks has not screamed "get me the ball more". At least not to me.

The run against Tech that he pushed outside unnecessarily is a legit issue.

At the same time, motioning him out of the backfield like Texas did and sending him deep should have resulted in a TD on Saturday. He really can be a match-up problem in the passing game.

  • one possilby arbitrary thing I noticed Saturday was in teh 1st half when his number got called on that off-tackle run out of hte pistol where the C and G pull and he ended up 1 on 1 with the safety. Both(?) times Gray ran it, he was able to stutter step and beat the safety. Daje failed to beat him. His straight line speed is outstanding, but I don't think he's nearly as ellusive as Gray in the open field.

  • I wish we would have given Daje a redshirt, and given the ball to Monroe more.

Daje could have used a year to mature

I bet if he got 5 consecutive carries like Gray he'd break one. He would be in a rhythm. I think that's the only thing holding him back. Let him get into a rhythm, and he'll work magic.

  • I think the only thing holding him back is time. It is almost a given freshmen RBs are in a rush to hit the hole. Yeldon did it a couple times vs TAMU. Just takes time for kids to settledown and trust the blocking. Gray is a rare exception. Some kids never do it. Took McFadden until his 3rd NFL season. Kid has a lot of upside and hopefully he will mature.

  • I really love Daje. He's an asset in the passing game. He also had a nice run that almost went for a TD.

He is going to be really good. I would like to see us run more of a spread offense with him and Gray as the main backs. along with Malcolm.

That's crazy, I'm not saying he is as complete of a back as Gray, but he's made many runs this year where he's made multiple defenders miss tackles. I do know what play you're talking about though, I think he got caught in between cutting back and going for the pylon...he's definitely got to be more decisive in that type of situation.

Is this a RT reference? Along with the Lubbock bong?

i have no knowledge of Daje's situation or if he's a "troubled" guy, but it seems that getting him on the field is the
best way to get him to buy in to the team.

  • imo if Daje were not to respond to this staff then it is unlikely he would to any. This staff is full of good people, football aside, that know how to mentor and talk to the young people. That is a big deal imo. I think he will grow and do fine both on and off the field. Giving him time he hasn't earned (football and maturity) would be a mistake.

Sorry to be dense, but what are up downs?

  • Yet, he de-committed from TCU to Texas. Seems like he would've had a grand old time with that crew in Fort Worth.

  • Before the season started, Daje got into a bar fight. Before the coaches found out, Daje had a petulant attitude towards the coaches. As the coaches were brainstorming how they were going to deal with his attitude, they got the news of the bar fight. Harsin, Applewhite, and Wiley had him do some "exercises". Yes, Daje puked. Daje was then told to go see Mack in his office. Mack told him he wouldn't play in the opener. Daje was crushed and has been a model citizen ever since. His off the field stuff is old news. Lack of touches presently has been dictated mostly by other people stepping up, Daje needing a little more coaching with his vision, and the flow of the game. It isn't related to off the field stuff at this point. Ther is only one ball. Davis, Ship, Gray, Berg, Goodwin, DJ.......somebody is going to have a spell where they don't get the ball. And Malcolm B. hasn't got back I to the fold yet.

  • Disciplinary exercise. You chop your feet running in place then quickly fall into pushup position and get yourself back up. Repeated done quickly while the coach blows his whistle, etc.
