Moutaineers are a good addition, but not as beneficial to Big 12 as keeping Missouri

  • I'd say West Virginia is a more valuable football and basketball program than Missouri because their fans are more passionate and there are just as many, if not more, of them.

  • Good article.

Interesting times. I hope Boren is sitting in Norman sucking his thumb.

  • Missouri football is going to fall off a cliff without Texas recruits. I bet West Virginia remains a top 25 team in the Big 12 especially with Texas recruiting.

I think West Virginia is a better football and basketball school and its not even close.

  • Meet the new doormat of the SEC: Missouri
First they whine to Big Ten, but they don't take them.
SEC happy to grab the two TV markets and an automatic win for most football members save Kentucky and maybe Vanderbilt.

  • John Denver said West Virginia was "almost heaven" with the Blue Ridge Mountains and Sheandoah River. So we get Holgersen and Huggins every year again.

  • I think, especially if we got to 12 and add louisville later on, the Big 12 is the second best football conference and closer than people realize to the sec, and it is probably the best basketball conference since the big east took a number of hits.

  • And so the SEC is the barometer of what is good and what is not? Nice article, but not great.

  • As has been said on other threads removing Missouri is addition by subtraction for the simple reason that they were a constant source of discontent. Forget the fact that they were universal underachievers in every sport. I keep waiting for someone in the national media to take them to task for being the catalyst for all of this when they lifted their skirt for the Big 10.

Pertaining to the first point you've made, I'd have to respectively disagree. The B12 is at the same stratosphere as the $EC, if not a stronger conference, by BCS computer ranking of the schools (the supposedly most unbiased and objective measurement).

With regard to basketball, I would concur that B12 has the potential to be a dominating conference in this aspect as you have alluded to with the further fragmentation if the BE.

Without knowing the exact stipulations of maintaining an AQ status as per the bylaws of the current BCS system, things are looking pretty glum for BE.

Lots has been mentioned about how this could open some doors for WV's recruiting in Texas. Does anyone see this opening up more recruiting towards the Mid-Atlantic seeing how we seem to be opening up a little more to out of state recruiting? I know we already have TV exposure nationwide but playing near a recruit's hometown can lead to some better openings.

Sorry i didn't make my first point very clear. I think the b12 is every bit as good as the sec especially this year but i would give them the slight edge because how often does kstate start 7-0 or even Okie lite for that matter, thus skewing the computer rankings. This year I think the conference is better as a whole but if we were to look over the last 5-10 years I think they would win out. Maybe I'm wrong and the stats say something different, I'm not going to bother looking them up, but if you want to, knock yourself out. One thing you can't argue with is that 4 different teams from the sec have won the last 5 national championships

Yes, SEC's number of championships are hard to overlook and argue against. And IMO, that's has to be at least contributory from the non-computer polls, which is clearly affected by the outcome, particularly the margin of scores, and the media hype for the SEC. The salient point I am making is that, apart from human voters, which can be influenced by so many external variables, B12 is not a neutered conference by any stretch of imagination. Hope this clarifies.

Welcome, but is it big oober or bi goober? I kid, I kid. But that is the same question I asked myself when WVU showed on the radar. I think what it does is give WVU a bigger shot at attracting the better rated players from their sphere of influence, as Alan eluded in his story, being the Ohio/Pennsylvania grounds. But, I also think it takes away somewhat Virginia Tech's dominance in mid-atlantic area and will give up and coming Coach London (VA) more competition in the rich Tidewater recruiting grounds, which for Texas fans is the equivalent to the Golden Triangle in many respects.

With that said, I don't see the Big 12 teams benefiting too much from pulling big name players west without some sort of conference broadcast vehicle. What Dodds and Brown say is true. Parents, for the most part, have the most influence over a recruits school choice. With that comes the desire on the part of the player to perform in front of family and friends against top competition. Advantage->WVU.
