  • Don't remember much handwringing about this class when they signed. Only guys I can remember being questioned were Nkwopara, Whaley, Graham, and Kriegel. Just straight up misses.

We were comforted by the fact that it was the third best class in the country per Rivals (based in avg. stars; 5th based on points).

Lets just erase this debacle from our memory.

  • This is what happens when you only watch the players highlight videos. Macks got no one to blame but himself.

    COACH CUTLIP

  • Class looks like a Mackovic class....2 first rounders (Okafor and Vacarro), two other fairly high drafted players (Walters and Whaley), a couple of solid depth chart guy (Porter, Matthews), a glorious bust or two (Gilbert), and lots of injuries, grades, and transfers.

i see your point. some of it can be bad luck or risks. this was a National Champioship class. half of it didn't make it.

    http://rivals.yahoo.com/texas/football/recruiting/commitments/2002

    Haney- skiing injury. never played
    Hardy- bust
Janszen- really no better after HS
Johnson- non-qualifier, arrest. ended up at Tech
Martin- low-bridged in the HS title game. never the same after. became very overwieght
McCullugh- Blutarsky. 0.00 in one semester at Texas. ended up at Oregon State
    Matthew Melton- nothing
    Miksch- shocking offer
Pickryl- top DE in the country. chronic shoulder injury. never had much of a chance
    Pittman- transfer
Smith- Greg Robinson said he couldn't figure out the defense. gone
Timmons- tremendouse recruit. tremendous personal problems. possibly the second most talented player in the class
Tweedie- contributor. wish he would have worked out at OL
    Valdez- bust
    Williams- sick HS video. grades.

thank God the rest of it was tremendous.

Top five class per multiple recruiting rankings, not just Rivals. Everyone was very happy with the class. Anyone saying I told you now so is a liar.

    Hindsight is great.

  • Most of these players got caught in the wash. Staff transition. Scheme transition. S&C transition. Underclassmen overtaking. It happens. But the 5 or 6 that stuck are AA and All-Conference caliber. A couple are potential national trophy finalists. That's the upside.

    Baloney.

Anyone who said we were doing a poor job recruiting got treated with "you have never coached" or "you think you know more than Mack?" nonsense.

On the old IT board I was crucified for complaining about the 08 and 09 classes as being a complete mail in job by our offensive staff. The recruiting services were doing nothing more than rubber stamping rankings and selling the lists to the faithful. Those schools with the most fans got the better rankings. It was that simple.

It was obvious what was happening on the offensive side of the ball those two classes for anyone who cared to try and think for themselves.

    Valdez- bust

Valdez had some injury issues that set him back. He was a quality backup though afterward.

  • Any way you look at it, it's a poor class.

Two high round selections - Okafor and Vacarro - and just two other NFL picks and/or free agents - Whaley and Walters.

You can't get much worse than that.

I recall much knashing of the teeth about the OL recruiting that was right on point (credit CTJ for many good posts). I don't recall much more than that on the other boards, although it was evident that some good rbs weren't gravitating to the GB offense. Not disagreeing with your post since I don't read the IT board. It was clear to me that everything was going to hell and a hand basket, and had been for some time, but I didn't reach that moment of clarity until after the 2010 season.
