Manny Diaz continues to try to find ways to get his message across to his first-year starters.

The ground game has not been kind to Manny Diaz and the Texas defense. After yet another team put up a lot of yards against the Horns, UT's DC is still searching for answers.

Quick fixes for the defense:
1. Stay exclusively in Nickel and Dime sets. Base 4-3 is worthless against the spread. LBs should never be lined up out wide on true WRs.
2. No more zone coverage or pre-snap movement. QBs are too easily reading both and adjusting. And no pre-snap disguises; just putting guys out of position in coverage. Man up across the board in the secondary.
3. Jam/bump and run coverage. Stop giving so much cushion to the wideouts. Will have safety help over the top, LBs can clean up over the middle with proper drops.
4. Move KV to conventional FS and use Turner/Duke as the nickel
5. Limit speed rush from DEs to prevent opening of edge running lanes (see what LSU did to A&M this past week). Want to contain the pocket
6. Motion by the backs should be handled by the safeties. Contain to let team rally to the ball carrier/receiver.

Actually the DC has a half point. His defense of last year was great in some outings--well majority of the outings--but not good at all in some. OU, and Baylor come to mind. We also gave up a lead to Aggies late and KSU beat us in our house. If we play Baylor better and hold KSU down when we had the opportunity, it would have been a different season.
Having said that, all of last year is water under the bridge. There are two big questions on the table right now: Did the players who are playing now not practice the defence last year? Secondly, whose responsibility is it to make sure the replecements are up to speed before the season starts?
Given that you are going to have to replace players in the college game, are we to understand that everytime starters graduate the defense will return to mediocrity?

Don't you have to gain yards to score? You can't score going backwards correct? Unless our defense can force a bunch of turnovers, reducing the yardage seems like a great place to also reduce points scored by opposing defenses. Playing press coverage on 4th and 4 instead of giving the WR a 10 yd cushion seems rather basic.
I truly wonder what in the wide world of sports we're going to do at Safety next yr with Vacarro graduating after this season. Phillips and Thompson need to figure it out asap back there.
