Texas lands five-star Gray

The recruitment of one of the nation’s top running backs has come to end with Mack Brown and the Texas Longhorns receiving the commitment of Johnathan Gray (Aledo).

Five-star running back Johnathan Gray committed to Texas at 12:01am

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound five-star running back said he would commit on his birthday a few weeks ago and he did just that shortly after midnight on April 22, his 18th birthday in a release sent out by his father, James Gray.

“It’s Texas,” said Johnathan via text message. “This was a difficult decision. I chose UT because I get a chance to be teammates with very good players. Getting the chance to work with Malcolm Brown will make me a better player. I also feel that having a young staff and playing in a new offense will be exciting. I feel really blessed to have this opportunity.”

Gray selected the Longhorns over TCU and Texas A&M after making multiple visits to all three schools.

Gray, the best all-around back the state has produced in a number of years, has starred at Aledo since his freshman year. He rushed for 969 yards as a freshman before helping lead the 4A school to back-to-back state titles the past two years.

In the two state title games, Gray has put on a show.

In 2009, Gray rushed for 251 yards and four touchdowns on 31 carries in a 35-21 win over Brenham.

In December 2010, he topped his terrific sophomore performance with 323 yards and a state record eight touchdowns on 28 carries in a 69-34 blowout over La Marque.

All told, the back with 10.7 100-meter speed, has rushed for more than 6,000 yards the last two seasons. He has 104 rushing touchdowns.

Texas co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach Major Applewhite led the recruitment for the Longhorns.

Gray becomes the 16th commitment in the Longhorns’ 2012 class.
He is joined in the 247Sports.com national top 100 by defensive tackle Malcom Brown (Brenham), quarterback Connor Bewer (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral), receiver Thomas Johnson (Dallas/Skyline) and receiver Cayleb Jones (Austin/Austin High).

Gray will have a 9 a.m. CST press availability to answer questions about his commitment. Hookem.com’s Jeff Howe will be live at the availability.
