Junior Day recap

Curtis Riser

DeSoto offensive lineman is one of two commitments for the Horns so far today.

Junior Day news is still flowing in. But if you're checking the internet for the first time today, here's a quick catch-up.

    • I hope Mack keeps plugging away on Brown, and I hope no one has a hemorrhoid flareup when he goes aggy.

As it is, this is a VERY encouraging start to the class.

    • Great job today. I'd say have a beer, but I know the 247 HQ only serves coffee.

    • Junior Day has a different feel this year.

      Were the offers more selective?

      Was 5-7 a factor?

Was having a new coaching staff that hasn't had as much contact with the recruits the difference?

    • Gawd I feel so dirty, I just upvoted MIB (better known at the vote slut) post because it made me spit iced tea.

Gerry/Jeff/Bobby/et al great work today, coverage hit it out of the park.

    • I'm surprised two of those WRs didn't commit today. I'm guessing they call from coach's office in the morning.

    • Having a top 10 class this year is a win. If you ask me for a prediction I see a 13-17th ranked class. 5-7, with the turnover of staff is going to be tough to overcome. Also the bloom appears to be off Mack. He has always got by on perception. Well, for the first time perception is against him now. Sure we might be acting a little more selectively, but if people don't think we wanted and expected 10+ committs today, they are naive. We tried. this is how its going to be for now on; we are like everyone else.

Had Mack acted proactively and made his staff selections before the bowl games, like everyone else tries to do, we would have had more time to establish relationships with 2012 recruits. We sacrificed this recruiting season to a degree, to appeal to Mack's misguided senses of what is proper.

Hahaha...great point. I guess "this recruiting season" is only two weeks long in El Gato world. Tell me again the universities that have more than 5 commits for 2012 since we are obviously so behind.

Exactly, but even being new here I know El Gato's rep for bad mouthing all things Mack. Not trying to be mean, just saying..

Back to the other thought on where this class will rank...way too early for me to guess but I suspect that we will land enough big names to be in the top 10 by next February, and after holding this past class together with a new staff, that would be incredible.

Mack's got his work cut out for him. But there used to be a time when recruiting was his claim to fame... years before early commitments on Junior days.

As a fan, it makes you a little nervous, but at the same time I think it's more exciting to follow!

We get it, you don't like Mack. How many different ways are you going to come up with to bash Mack. Get over it already.

    • “I really don’t have any favorites after thinking about it on the way home,” Wheeler said. “I like them all and I’m going to take my time with the process.”

As for his mother, Veronica, she likes one school but is concerned about the size.

“My mom likes Texas, but she thinks it may be to big for me,” Wheeler said.

Damn. Hopefully Wyatt can work some magic on this one.

    • If Wheeler's mom likes Texas, the size is probably just a minor aspect. It is a culture shock to those guys who attend really small schools. Being from NE Texas, it's definitely a factor, but I do think its a rather small one. It sounds like Mom is in our corner and we all know Mack will ease her fears when it comes to her caveat. I was worried because right after his visit, he listed TCU ahead of Texas. Now, after the drive back, he essentially has them at the same level, with Mom in our corner. So Ill take it. Really want this kid.

Everything I've read said our expectations were 10-12 by the end of February. One junior day and there are 5 commits. Sounds pretty much on schedule to me.
