Huge second half lifts Texas

Rick Barnes

Texas head coach Rick Barnes didn't have to say much as he watched his team outscore KSU 48-24 in the second half Saturday.

Texas rallied by playing "Rick Barnes basketball" to beat K-State 75-64. J'Covan Brown led the way with 23 and Alexis Wangmene picked the fist double-double of his career.

    • I've never seen FT differential like this before. Texas' 28-0 second half FT advantage was just amazing...

    • The K State curse has finally been lifted... Congrats to Wangmene on his first double- double.

To his credit, Martin did not mention the FT differential, or say anything about the officiating. Most coaches would have looked at that as a tailor made excuse.

    • We have to keep the momentum going next week. No mental letdown. A sweep of the state of the land thieves; and we should be in the dance. We absolutely need a split and then have to beat a slumping Baylor team at home.

    • Martin is a great coach and a great guy. He gets his guys to buy in, and he's tough on them, but he stays classy off the court.

I don't know how he is off the court, but his on-court persona really leaves much to be desired...

So you don't like passionate coaches?

    • I do, but I thnk his behavior at times makes Bo Pelini blush. And i do believe there is such thing as going overboard.

Man he loves Rick Barnes............after every game Horns vs KSU he praises Barnes win lose or draw. From the post game presser:

"I told Rick, `That is Rick Barnes basketball, the basketball I grew up watching your kids play,'" Martin said. "They came out in the second half and punched us in the mouth.

"They punched us again and again and again. We never punched back."

    • A little off topic but if anyone watched the game before on ESPN Louisville vs W. Virginia
you would've seen a very intense Bob Huggins lashing out at his players for choking and blowing a lead in the final 4 minutes. Old school passion that get's coaches fired in the NBA.
One of their big men #13 Deniz Kilicli fouled out of the game. After timeouts he'd be the last guy to take a seat on the bench and everytime he would pick on a scrub and make him get up and move so he could have his seat. This guys from Turkey. I could never imagine Balbay doing this on the UT bench last year. Just strange to see a guy standing there telling somebody that they're sitting in his seat and to get up.

Martin is a very good coach for K-State. His style is intense and it looks like he's going to have a heart attack. He recruits well and get's the most out of his talent. Manhatten, Kansas isn't the esasiest place to get city kids to come to.

I have set behind Huggins when he was coaching Cincy. The guy puts on a show........as a player I would prefer the softer approach.

Barnes has changed his actions on the bench in the last few years. Especially this year.........with a young team. When a$$es are chewed its Todd Wright during time outs.

    • Maybe i'm in the minority here, but i actually like Frank Martin. Probably because i'm a transporter fan, and also because the guy can recruit and coach his team. I wouldn't mind Martin taking over if something were to happen to Barnes.

Texas would never hire Martin but it sure is hard to dislike him when all he does is praise your coach and program.

      Very true.

    • This group really feels like a team in the truer sense. I hope they can keep it together because although their inexperience is maddening their " never say quit" attitude is what it's all about. I would love, love, love to see Brown and Kabongo both return next year. I think it would solidify Ridley's commitment and perhaps bring in someone like Pollard.

    • 28-0 is amazing! i wonder if you could measure how close that is to a record in terms of difference in free throws in a half.

    • The odd thing was they should've been whistled for every foul. Texas got away with a few in the second half, especially Wangmene. But the Big XII refs owe us a bunch IMO.

    • I'll take it after the Missouri home game I saw.
